Part#7: How should we read the Bible?

Since the Bible is literally God’s revealed word to mankind, I would suggest that you approach it humbly and with a great deal of respect. You should read it plainly taking into account the Biblical, historical, cultural, and literary context with the purpose of determining the authors intended meaning.  Always remember, the final guide to the interpretation of Scripture is Scripture itself. When you run into difficult passages always turn to the rest of the Word of God for the correct interpretation. Once you understand the plain reading of scripture, as part of God’s creation, you are commanded to obey what you read.

But in order for you to truly approach God’s Word in a humble manner, seriously consider the following message:

Who is God?

God is Yahweh! The One true God.

God is One

Father, Son, Holy Spirit.

The Triune God

The Great I AM!!!

God is the Creator and Sustainer of the Universe!

He made the universe out of nothing and sustains it with His Almighty power.

God is Lord over all!

King of Kings!!!

Lord of Lords!!!

God is perfect and amazing beyond our imagination.

God is Eternal, Self-Existing, and Unchanging

God is the Alpha and the Omega!!!

He has no beginning and no end.

God Himself is the beginning of all things.

God is All Powerful, All Knowing, And there is nowhere in all creation where you can go to escape His presence.

He knows every single one of your thoughts, words, and deeds.

Everything you think you have done in secret, He knows.

God is Holy

God is Righteous

There is no darkness in Him.

God is True & Truthful.

He never lies.

His Word is the standard of truth itself.

God is Faithful

God is Love

God is the only absolute Lawgiver & just Judge of all the earth.

This is what God proclaimed about Himself to Moses on Mt. Sinai:

“The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.” (Exodus 34: 6b – 7)

As you can see, God is perfect in all things, including love and justice.

This is your Creator!!! And as your Creator, He is also the one who will judge you when you die. If you were to die today would God see you as good enough to go to heaven? Let’s take a quick look at God’s Law to find out:

          1. How many lies have you told in your life?

          2. Ever stolen anything?

          3. Ever got drunk or high?

Living for your own pleasure instead of for God is an act of self-worship which is idolatry.

          4. God sees all sexual activity outside of marriage as sexual immorality. Ever had sex outside of marriage?

          5. Jesus even said that if you look upon a person to lust after them you have already committed adultery with them in your heart (Matt. 5: 27 – 28). How many times have you done that?

          6. When people have hurt you, have you had hateful thoughts about them? If you have, then according to God, you are a murderer at heart. (1 John 3: 15).

Taking into account that God’s standard is perfection (James 2:10). If you were to die today and you committed the 6 sins mentioned above even once, God would see you as a liar, a thief, an idolater, and an adulterer and murder at heart. “But why would God care about adultery and murder in my heart?” Answer: The greater the goodness of a person, the more they hate evil. God, being infinitely good, hates evil in an infinite way. That is why God does not let criminals go free without justice being done. That is why God made Hell, where He pours out His wrath on evil for all of eternity. That is why God sees your lust as adultery and your hatred as murder. Now think of every sinful thought, word, and deed that you have done in secret. God was there!!! Listen to the warning of your conscience. God declares that all liars, murderers, and the sexually immoral will have their part in the lake of fire (Revelation 21: 8). No thief, no adulterer, and no idolater will have their part in the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6: 9 – 10). But  thankfully God is perfect in both justice and love.

Jesus came down from heaven to be born of a virgin and live a sinless life. He satisfied the righteous requirement of the law that you have broken, so that He could take your place on the cross as the perfect sacrifice. On that cross, the Creator died for His creation. On that cross, Jesus suffered the wrath of God that you deserve for your sins satisfying the justice of God. On that cross, a legal transaction occurred. Your shameful sins were credited to His account and He paid for them in full with His life’s blood. At the same time, His perfect righteousness was credited to you so that you could have peace with God. Then He rose from the dead, defeating death and later ascended to Heaven to sit at the right hand of the Father. Jesus loves you so much that He suffered God’s eternal wrath in your place. His infinite love for you should move you to love Jesus more than anything in the universe, even more than your own life, and hate all of your sins that put Him on the cross. Yes you are guilty. Yes you deserve Hell. But let His infinite kindness lead you to repentance and faith in Him. Throw yourself at His mercy. Confess your sins to Him and apologize for offending Him. Ask Him to forgive you for all of your sins. Turn away from your sins and Trust in the work of Jesus Christ alone for your salvation, and He will forgive your sins, clothe you in Jesus’ righteousness, adopt you as His child, and in the end take you to heaven to be with Him forever.

Now read the Bible daily and obey what you read.
